I was showing a friend around Total Wines and saw this bottle that was only 14 bucks. I thought the label was pretty cool so I picked it up. (I also like Zins, what can I say.) But we all know that the label isn’t the end all be all of wine. It’s all about the taste. (Though the label can help.)
The wine has a dark rich red color and the aromas of it seem to say that this wine is going to have some bite to it as well as a little alcohol. (I didn’t give the wine any time to open up, just right out of the bottle.) It coats the glass really well and has super slow-moving legs.
The wine is pretty smooth when it hits the tongue. There is a hint of smokiness that shows itself pretty early on. As the wine moves back it stays pretty smooth and there actually isn’t a lot of bite as I thought there would be. There is a slight aftertaste that pops up after the wine finishes, but it’s nothing that drives me away.
Final thoughts: While the wine’s a good price, I wouldn’t use this as a starter for a special event, but it’s not a bad follow-up or one for just hanging around the house and watching a movie.
